Stay Scam-Savvy to Protect Your Identity This Holiday Season

With the holiday season underway, identity thieves are primed to target unsuspecting shoppers. While you're busy finding the perfect gifts, booking travel, and juggling holiday tasks, scammers are crafting ways to access your personal information. Here are some ways to keep your identity and finances secure.

Opt for Secure Payment Methods

Whether shopping online or in-store, always be cautious with how you pay. Credit cards offer built-in protections that make them a safer choice than debit cards. With a credit card, your liability is limited if there is an unauthorized transaction, and credit card companies have robust monitoring and alert systems. Debit cards, on the other hand, draw funds directly from your bank account, making it harder to recover lost funds. Use your credit card for shopping and your debit card for ATM withdrawals.

Be Wary of 'Too Good to Be True' Deals

Scammers know that during the holiday rush, people are on the lookout for big discounts and hard-to-find items. A common scam involves setting up fake websites or pop-up ads that promote heavily discounted goods—often high-demand items like electronics or toys. Before jumping on a deal, double-check the legitimacy of the website, read reviews, and avoid clicking on unfamiliar links. A general rule of thumb: If a deal looks too good to be true, it likely is.

Protect Your Devices and Passwords

With so much of our holiday shopping happening online, keeping your devices secure is essential. Use strong, unique passwords and consider a password manager. Additionally, turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) whenever possible for an extra layer of security. Updating antivirus software is also a wise step, especially before online purchases.

Avoid Financial Transactions on Public Wi-Fi

Holiday shopping on the go is convenient, but public Wi-Fi networks make it easier for hackers to capture sensitive information. Using these networks to check your bank balance or make purchases can expose your sensitive information to scammers. Instead, use your cellular data or wait until you're on a secure, private network. If public Wi-Fi is your only option, consider a VPN to help shield your data.

Watch for Fake Delivery Notifications

During the holiday season, scammers know that many people are expecting packages. Fake delivery notifications sent by text or email have become common, tricking recipients into clicking on malicious links that can steal their personal information. If you receive an unexpected delivery alert, avoid clicking on any links. Instead, go directly to the official website of the delivery service and enter the tracking number to verify the package.

To keep your holiday season fraud-free, use secure payment options, steer clear of suspicious discounts, and protect your online presence to safeguard your identity and finances. A little caution goes a long way in keeping your holidays—and personal information—safe.
