These Delicious Holiday Beverages Also Make Thoughtful Gifts
New Africa / Adobestock

With the holidays approaching, nothing beats the warmth of a handmade gift. These two simple beverage mixes―a fragrant mulling spice blend and a velvety hot chocolate―capture the cozy spirit of the season. Easy to make in batches, they’re perfect for sharing with loved ones or savoring by the fireside.

Mulling Spice Blend

This aromatic medley infuses cider or wine with orchard-fresh notes, filling your home with the scent of the holidays.

Ingredients (makes 3-4 batches):

  • 1 tablespoon crushed cinnamon bark

  • 4-5 whole star anise, lightly crushed

  • 1 teaspoon crushed cloves

  • 2 teaspoons cardamom pods

  • 1 tablespoon dried orange peel

Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight jar.

To serve: Add 2 teaspoons of the spice mix to 4 cups of apple cider or light red wine. Simmer gently over low heat for 20-30 minutes to infuse the flavors. Strain to remove the spices, and then garnish with cinnamon sticks or orange slices.

Velvety Hot Chocolate Mix

This rich, creamy blend turns an ordinary cup of cocoa into a gourmet treat. It’s foolproof, customizable, and guaranteed to please every chocolate lover.

Ingredients (makes 12 servings):

  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted

  • 1¼ cups Dutch-processed
unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 cups powdered milk

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips

Whisk all the powdered ingredients together in a bowl, then stir in the chocolate chips. Store in airtight jars for up to 6 months.

To serve: Whisk ½ cup of mix into ¾ cup of hot milk or water until frothy. Top with marshmallows or a candy cane for a festive touch.

Package each mix in a clear jar tied with a ribbon and a simple tag with directions. These gifts show that the sweetest surprises often come from your kitchen, made with love.
